Definition:
Free Will is the sovereign, God-given capacity of human beings to choose their thoughts, actions, moral direction, and spiritual destiny. It is the sacred power that allows mortals to cooperate with, resist, or even ignore divine guidance. In the cosmology of the Urantia revelation and the celestial teachings of the Correcting Time, free will is the central foundation of soul growth and the essential prerequisite for all co-creative partnership with the celestial administration.

Without free will, there can be no moral development, no spiritual responsibility, no authentic love, and no soul evolution.

Core Characteristics of Free Will

1. Sovereignty of Moral Choice

Humans have the unqualified right to choose:

The universe honors these choices with absolute respect.

2. Foundation of Personality

Free will is the expression of personal sovereignty, bestowed by the Universal Father. It is what makes each human being a unique, unrepeatable personality with eternal potential.

3. Essential to Soul Growth

Every moral choice contributes to the formation of the morontia soul.
Courageous, loving, and value-aligned decisions strengthen soul substance.
Fear-based or selfish decisions retard development but do not eliminate the opportunity to choose again.

4. Irreducible and Non-Coercive

No celestial being—including angels, Melchizedeks, Magisterial Sons, or Michael of Nebadon—ever violates human free will.
All guidance is invitational, never compulsory.

5. Co-Creative Responsibility

Free will is required for:

  • Compassion: Responding to suffering with care is a choice.

  • Empathy: Opening one’s heart to others is a choice.

  • Love: The greatest choice of all—expressed in service and altruism.

Thus, free will is the engine of all sustainable social evolution.

Free will determines the intimacy and effectiveness of the human relationship with the Thought Adjuster.
