The Urantia Book is a spiritual and philosophical text first published in 1955 by the Urantia Foundation. It presents a vast cosmology, a narrative of universe organization, accounts of celestial personalities, an interpretation of the life and teachings of Jesus, and a framework for spiritual growth. Because its origin is not historically verifiable, it is best understood as a religious or revelatory work within its own tradition, rather than as an established historical or scientific source.
Within the Urantia teachings themselves, the book is described as a revelatory compilation provided by various celestial beings for the spiritual upliftment of humanity. It aims to clarify the nature of God, the organization of the universe, the purpose of life, the journey of the soul, and the meaning of spiritual progression.
The book is divided into four major parts:
Part I: The Central and Superuniverses
This section describes the Universal Father, the Trinity, the organization of the universe, and the divine administration as understood within the teachings of the book.
Part II: The Local Universe
This part focuses on the Local Universe of Nebadon, its rulers, its spiritual administration, and its evolutionary purpose. It introduces figures such as Michael of Nebadon and the Mother Spirit.
Part III: The History of Urantia
This section presents a broad narrative of Earth’s (Urantia’s) geological, biological, and cultural history, presented from the viewpoint of the book’s spiritual authors.
Part IV: The Life and Teachings of Jesus
The final section contains an extensive account of the life of Jesus, called Christ Michael within the book’s cosmology, offering spiritual and moral interpretations of his mission.
Readers and study groups often use The Urantia Book as a source for exploring themes of spiritual evolution, personality development, divine love, the relationship between God and humanity, and the structure of the universe as portrayed in its teachings.
